Intended for educators, policymakers, industry leaders, and community organizations, it emphasizes the importance of connecting students with real-world career experiences to support local economic growth and personal development. By examining WBL programs across Hawaiʻi Island’s six districts, the report provides insights and recommendations to enhance collaboration among schools, employers, and communities, ensuring that students are better prepared for future careers while addressing local workforce need.
KEY INSIGHTS
-
Bridging Educational and Career Gaps: WBL provides students with practical skills and experiences that align with the needs of local industries. This alignment is essential for preparing students for successful careers and supporting the local economy. On Hawaiʻi Island, industries such as agriculture, healthcare, technology, and conservation offer significant opportunities for student engagement through WBL programs.
Enhancing Student Engagement and Retention: By making learning relevant and engaging, WBL helps to increase student motivation and retention. Students are more likely to stay in school and complete their education when they see a clear connection between their studies and future career opportunities. This is particularly important in rural areas where dropout rates can be higher.
Developing Essential Skills: WBL programs equip students with both technical and soft skills needed for the workforce. These include communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and time management, which are highly valued by employers. Additionally, WBL experiences help students build professional networks and gain insights into various career path.
Supporting Local Economic Growth and Community Development: By fostering a well-prepared and skilled workforce, WBL contributes to local economic development. It helps to address the skills gap and ensures that local businesses have access to qualified workers. This, in turn, supports community growth and resilience.
-
Geographical Barriers: The vast and diverse geography of Hawaiʻi Island poses challenges for transportation and access to WBL opportunities. Ensuring equitable access requires addressing these logistical issues, such as providing transportation solutions and creating regional hubs for WBL activities.
Cultural Relevance: Integrating Hawaiian values and cultural relevance into WBL programs is essential for making these experiences meaningful for students. Programs should incorporate local traditions and knowledge, ensuring that students feel connected to their heritage and community.
Support Services: Providing wraparound services such as transportation, childcare, and financial assistance can help students overcome barriers to participation. These services are crucial for students from low-income families or those with additional responsibilities at home.
Community and Industry Partnerships: Strengthening partnerships between schools, local businesses, and community organizations is vital for expanding WBL opportunities. Dedicated coordinators can facilitate these connections, ensuring that programs are sustainable and responsive to both student and industry needs.
